Menopause is reached when you have not had your period for 12 months. In Australia, the average age of menopause is 51 years, but it is normal to have menopause anywhere between 45 and 55 years. Menopause may occur earlier than expected for some because of surgery, cancer treatment, or unknown causes.  Perimenopause is the phase leading up to menopause when your ovaries are running out of eggs. This affects the level of hormones in our body, which can cause several different symptoms. The perimenopause phase can last from a few months up to 10 years before menopause is reached. On average, it lasts 4-6 years. Every woman experiences perimenopause and menopause differently. While some women can experience a lot of difficult symptoms during this time, other women will experience only mild symptoms
