Syphilis cases are on the rise in NSW, especially amongst women aged 15 to 44 years old. This has led to an increase in congenital syphilis, mother-to child transmission during pregnancy or at birth. If left untreated, syphilis in pregnancy can lead to serious health issues for both mother and baby, including premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth, early infant death, or long-term health complications. Congenital syphilis is preventable through early testing and treatment during pregnancy.
