What is hand, foot and mouth disease? - A common viral illness in children under 5, causing a rash or blisters on the hands, feet and mouth, plus fever and tiredness. Usually clears in 7–10 days. No vaccine available.
What are the symptoms? - Red blisters or rash on hands, feet and buttocks, mouth ulcers, fever, and tiredness. Eating and drinking can be painful.
When should I see a doctor? - If you're unsure whether your child is dehydrated, or if rash spots are larger than 3mm or oozing pus.
How does it spread? - Through contact with blisters, saliva or poo — it can spread up to a month after symptoms clear. Good hand hygiene helps prevent it.
