Meningitis is a serious infection that causes swelling of the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord (the meninges) and requires urgent medical care.
It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, cancer, or head injury. Meningitis is a medical emergency and can be life‑threatening—call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department if you are concerned.
